Essential stop for car and design enthusiasts

The MAUTO is one of the world’s most famous technical-scientific museums. It was founded in 1933 thanks to an initial exhibition of historic cars by two pioneers of national motoring, Cesare Goria Gatti and Roberto Biscaretti di Ruffia, but it was his son, Carlo Biscaretti di Ruffia, who came up with the idea, working hard to find an ideal location to host the car show.

In 1960 it was opened to the public in the current building designed by architect Amedeo Albertini. In 2011, the building was completely renovated and extended by architect Cino Zucchi for the 150th Anniversary of the Unification of Italy. Two years later, the Times will rank it among the 50 most beautiful museums in the world.

The Museum today is a permanent exhibition that houses an extraordinary collection of around 150 cars in addition to the remaining 60 stored in the basement, known as the ‘Open Garage’, which is only accessible by appointment.

The history of the car, its transformation from a means of transport to a cult object, from its origins to its contemporary evolution is narrated: through the evolution of the car, the momentous transitions of society are analysed.

In addition to the permanent exhibition, the museum includes the Documentation Centre, which collects original documents relating to cars, characters and events that have made automotive history; the Educational Centre, which offers activities for schools and universities; and the Congress Centre, which hosts events, and conferences.

The museum area of around twenty thousand square metres welcomes more than 200,000 visitors each year.
